Japan Travel: Sapporo attractions for the winter holidays
By now, millions have already witnessed impressive ice and snow sculptures from the Sapporo Snow Festival which was celebrated last February 1 to 12, 2018. But the charm and beauty of Sapporo don’t end there. If you’re planning to spend the rest of the holidays in the snowy mountains of Hokkaido, here are Sapporo attractions to visit!
How to get to Sapporo
But before we tell you more about the places to visit in Sapporo, let’s talk about how you can get to the city if you’re coming from outside or within the country.
Although international flights arrive and depart through Asahikawa Airport and Hakodate Airport, the cheapest and easiest way to fly into Sapporo is through Shin Chitose Airport. From here, you can choose to take a train, a bus or a cab going to the city. But it is recommended to take the train.
You can take the Rapid Airport with trains that depart every 15 minutes. It can get you to Sapporo around 37 minutes and costs ¥1,070.
Sapporo Beer Garden

Our first featured Sapporo attraction is a haven for beer lovers. Witness how beer is made and learn about the history of brewing in Japan when you visit the Sapporo Beer Garden. At the end of the tour, guests are given 30 minutes to drink as much beer as they like! So make sure to save enough room for some ice cold beer!

You can enter the Hokkaido University’s main gate which is a 7-minute walk from the Sapporo station. Inside the beautiful university are buildings made from the Meji era which are now still being used as school buildings. The university is open to the public and has lots of areas where you can take great photos. It also has its unique beauty no matter which season you plan to visit!

Shiroi Koibito Park

Get your sweet tooth ready and make sure to include Shiroi Koibito Park on your Sapporo travel itinerary because you wouldn’t want to miss Sapporo’s famous Chocolate Factory! It is no doubt that one of the things to do in Sapporo aside from exploring the beautiful city, is to eat and eat some more. The only place where you get a taste of the local produce in Hokkaido is found at Sapporo Central Wholesale Market.
Kaisen-Ichiba Kitano Gourmet is the first shop to open in Sapporo Central Wholesale Market and just a couple of years ago, they celebrated their 60th anniversary. Through the years they’ve served thousands of travellers with only the finest seasonal dishes and have made a name for themselves. If you want to taste fresh marine products and agricultural produce in Hokkaido, this is the best place to go to.

Hokkai Shabu Shabu
Shabu shabu is a famous Japanese food loved both by local and foreign travellers. And where else can you eat this favourite Japanese food than in its land of origin, right? In Hokkai Shabu Shabu, not only can you taste authentic shabu shabu, but also the local sake and Japanese sake. They have a course menu where you can enjoy an eat-all-you-can Hokkai shabu shabu hot pot, sashimi, rice ball, pickles and ramen for ¥5,600.
