HCMC Metropolitan Railway Starts Trial Operations

The HCMC Metropolitan Railway is finally launched in 13 October 2020 and now on its trial phase. This development is one of the major projects that the local residents and overseas investors look forward to in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

The new project introduces a 61.5-metre long three-car train stationed at Changping’s Warehouse in District 9 HCMC. It is made of aluminum alloy shell, painted in gray with blue accents.

Head of the HCMC Metropolitan Railway Management Committee (MAUR), Mr. Bui Xuan Cuong, stated that they paid great attention to the construction, installation, and testing of the trains. Between 2017 to 2019, the contractor Hitachi built the train parts in a Japanese factory, and reassembled it at the Kasado factory. Prior to sending the train parts to Ho Chi Minh City, the parts have been tested for safety.

Mr. Cuong said that HCMC Metro will operate at Chang Binh Warehouse in Q1 2021. By Q3, the main route will start from Chang Binh Warehouse to Binh Thai Intersection (Thu Duc District). Subsequently in Q4, they will begin testing the route from Yongpyong Warehouse to Tancang Station (Pingcheng area). An additional of 16 trains are expected to arrive in 2021.

HCMC Metro is expected to be operational in Q4 2021

The trains will be technically controlled by a communication-based train control radio waves. It can carry a total of 930 passengers (147 sitting and 783 standing passengers). It will be equipped with seats for the elderly, pregnant women, persons with disability and auxiliary equipment for emergency use.

The maximum speed of the train is 110 km/hr, and the average speed is about 40 km/hr.

From Ben Thanh (Zone 1) to Long Binh Warehouse, the entire route stretches about 20 kilometers long and includes 14 stations (3 underground and 11 elevated stations). At present, the project is close to 77% complete, and the city’s goal is to finish it by the end of 2021.

The total investment for the HCMC Metropolitan Railway’s project is about VND 43,700 billion (~SGD 25.6 billion), which has official development assistance from Japan and Ho Chi Minh City.
