To start your day, visit the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, the Istiqlal Mosque. It was named Istiqlal, an Arabic word for independence, to commemorate Indonesian independence. It was designed by Frederich Silaban, a Christian architect from North Sumatra, and was opened to public in 1978. This mosque is comprises of a large rectangular prayer hall, and 4 levels of balconies. It was also reported that former U.S. president Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama visited the Istiqlal Mosque in November 2010.

This hall contains different symbols of independence and is where the proclamation of independence is stored in a glass case inside a golden door called Gerbang Kemerdekaan, also known as the Gate of Independence. You can also take a lift to go to the viewing platform at the height of 115 metres above the ground level. Monas tower is only a 15-minute walk away from Istiqlal Mosque.
