Sabah is a Malaysian state which occupies the northern part of Borneo Island. Famed for the 4,095-metre tall Mount Kinabalu, Sabah is one of the places to visit in Malaysia thanks to its beautiful beaches, lush rainforest, abundant wildlife and incredible coral reefs. If you’re still wondering what is there to see in Sabah, our Malaysia travel guide gives you 5 reasons why it is a destination to include on your travel bucket list!
Kota Kinabalu is Sabah’s capital city where most travellers start their trip. It is where you can find Malaysia’s second-largest international airport, providing direct flights to various Asian cities such as several cities in China, Brunei, the Philippines and Singapore. This makes it easier for foreign tourists to travel to Kota Kinabalu as their starting point for other places to visit in Malaysia. Locals are very friendly and can speak basic English so getting around, asking for directions won’t be a problem! Kota Kinabalu has a simple lifestyle but is also one of the Malaysian cities that is prosperous and has a progressive economy.
Tanjung Aru Beach
Tanjung Ara Beach is undoubtedly one of the most popular landmarks in Kota Kinabalu. Just a 15-minute drive from Kota Kinabalu’s city centre, this is a place of relaxation that offers a stunning view of the sea and sunset.
Mengalum Island is another beach destination that is 56km north-west of Kota Kinabalu. Its white sandy beaches, clear tropical water and marine life make for a great tropical getaway in Malaysia. It’s the perfect sanctuary from the hectic city life.
Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu
The Kota Kinabalu City Mosque also known as Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu is regarded as Sabah’s 2nd main mosque after Sembulan’s State Mosque. It is a contemporary Islamic building where you can also see one of the most spectacular sunsets in Malaysia. It was built on the man-made lake in Likas Bay and was opened in 2000 after the proclamation of Kota Kinabalu’s city status.
Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park
Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park is one of the places to visit in Sabah and the first marine national park in Malaysia. Located on the west coast of Kota Kinabalu, this Sabah attraction is composed of 5 unique islands which include Sapi Island, Gaya Island, Manukan Island, Mamutik Island and Sulug Island. Each of these islands is a short 10-minute boat ride from each other and boasts their own wonderful scenery, adding charm to the already popular Sabah tourist place.
The Sapi Island is regarded as the cleanest and most interesting island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The surrounding sea has beautiful coral reef where one can enjoy snorkelling or diving to see colourful fish swimming. They can also enjoy “helmet diving” without any professional training and enjoy walking while surrounded by the fish.
