Korea Travel Guide: 5 Do’s And Don’ts

Travel141 | Things Not To Do In Korea | Korea Travel Guide

Whether it’s the Korean dramas or their irresistibly charming girl and boy groups that got you obsessed with their culture, Korea is taking over as one of the must-visit places in the world. Is a trip to Korea in your travel plans this year? While you may know some of their quirks courtesy of what you see online, there are still some things you need to remember when travelling in Korea. Let this short Korea travel guide help you ensure a pleasant and peaceful vacation!

Go easy on the skin-baring clothes during your Korea travel adventure

Travel141 | Things Not To Do In Korea | Korea Travel Guide

Are sleeveless and backless tops your favourite clothing pieces? These styles are typically frowned upon by the elderly Korean women. As such, try to fill your luggage with loose and breezy shirts instead. Plus, they’re perfect for whatever Korea travel adventure you embark on. While baring your shoulder and back is not ideal, shorts and skirts are generally accepted.

Use both hands when accepting or presenting things

Travel141 | Things Not To Do In Korea | Korea Travel Guide | Use Both Hands

Whether you’re handing payment for your meal or accepting a bowl of food from someone, use both hands. This is because using one hand is considered to be rude.

Remember that age is important for Koreans

Travel141 | Things Not To Do In Korea | Korea Travel Guide | Let the eldest eat first

In other cultures, asking about someone’s age is blasphemy. But in Korea, it’s perfectly normal. Why? It’s because Korea values respect for elders. When eating, for example, you must wait for the eldest person in the table to eat first before everyone else can eat. Moreover, if an elderly person offers you a drink, you mustn’t refuse.

During your Korea travel escapade, don’t pour your own drinks

Travel141 | Things Not To Do In Korea | Korea Travel Guide | Don't pour your own drinks

In Korea, it’s impolite to pour your own drinks. So, if you’re going out for a round or two with your newfound Korean friends, let them pour your glass and then do the same for them. And remember, when you’re pouring for someone, do so with both hands.

Mind where you seat on public transportation

Travel141 | Things Not To Do In Korea | Korea Travel Guide | Mind where you seat on public transportation

Just because a seat is vacant doesn’t mean it’s for you. Relative to how important and valued the elderly are in Korea, there are seats on buses or trains that are reserved for the elderly and disabled. Make sure the seat you’re about to take is not for the elderly and the disabled.

Winter Exchange in Korea: Hanyang International Winter School

Winter Exchange in Korea: Hanyang International Winter School

If you live in a tropical country, you probably envy students in Korean dramas who get to attend university decked in outfits other than your usual “shorts, t-shirt, and slippers” combo. If you’d like to try it out for yourself and attend lessons while bundled up in three different layers of clothing, definitely do consider going for a winter exchange in Korea!

Hanyang University has been a very popular school for summer exchange programs over the years, with students anxiously waiting for applications to open such that they are able to secure their place. Following the success of their summer exchange program, they have recently started their first ever Hanyang International Winter Program.

WHY HANYANG?

Hanyang University is located in the heart of the Seoul where there is plenty to eat, drink, and do, such that students will never be bored. Not only was Hanyang ranked first for the number of CEO alumni in venture companies, it was also ranked among the top 200 universities in the 2017 QS World University Rankings. While this Korean university started off as an engineering institution, it has since grown to offer a wide-range of courses including business, medicine, political science, and physical education, among many others.

During their time at this Korean winter program, international students can also indulge in an array of activities that Hanyang has to offer. Whether they prefer to take on more vigorous sports such as skiing, or simply learn more about the Korean culture, they will be sure to get to know other international as well as local students along the way.

FLEXIBLE COURSES

Attending winter school in Korea should be an enjoyable experience for all, which is why Hanyang’s winter program only lasts two weeks so that you still have the rest of your winter break to explore other parts of Korea. Choose between two sessions; late December to mid January or mid January to early February and you’ll be all set to go. The courses offered also caters to a variety of students regardless of whether they’d like to take something within their major or something totally outside their comfort zone. From Korean Beauty and Makeup to Engineer and Society, there is bound to be a course to suit your interests. For those who would like to learn something a little more practical to benefit them during their stay in Korea, they can consider learning how to speak Korean.

While students are subjected to a maximum of two courses during their time in Hanyang, they can always attend both sessions of this Korean winter exchange program should they be interested in three or even four of the courses.

ON-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATIONS

For ultimate convenience, international students are strongly encouraged to stay at the Hanyang accommodation which consists of various types of dormitories. There is a wide variety of room types depending on the students’ preference; if you are a social butterfly and are excited being around others, you may opt for the 3- or even 4-bedroom lodging. However, if you’d just like to keep to yourself after a long day out, a single room may suit you much better.

Hanyang is also looking at partner accommodations for this year’s winter program to give its students more choices when looking at lodging options. While these off-campus accommodations will not be as near to the campus, they will still be within walking distance so as to ensure convenience for all students. As these plans are not firmed up yet, do check their website  for constant updates.

If the Hanyang Winter Program is anything like its Summer Program, spots are guaranteed to go fast. Online applications open 17 September 2018 so be sure to set your alarms and have your browsers ready to register yourself for two weeks of study in Korea.

Although the time difference with Korea isn’t large, you may feel slightly exhausted after your 6-hour flight. That coupled with your luggage may make your mode of transportation an issue. To make things easier for yourself, consider booking a private hire car such that you will have a driver awaiting your arrival at the Seoul Incheon airport who will then safely take you to your dormitory. As Travel141 will be launching an International Car Rental service soon, do subscribe to our newsletter below in order to receive regular updates.
